Feeling Overwhelmed as a Sandwich Generation Caregiver? 4 Key Ways to Manage Expectations of Others!

Today, I want to address a significant pain point for many women in the sandwich generation: managing expectations of others.

Recently, I received an email from a woman who posed this question: Is it fair to expect to be treated the way I treat others?

As someone who balances caring for kids and aging loved ones, this woman pours her time, energy, and support into those she cares about because she genuinely cares. Yet, she often feels like the world just takes and takes without giving anything back. Can you relate?

She also questioned, If I ask for something—whether it’s help, understanding, or just a little kindness—do I have a right to feel upset if that request is ignored?

It’s completely natural to feel that way. We all want our needs acknowledged.

Her next concern was, Should I stop giving to those who don’t reciprocate what I give? On one hand, she wants to be generous and kind—that’s part of her identity. On the other hand, it feels draining when her efforts go unnoticed or unappreciated. Does this sound familiar?

She expressed a desire to remain true to herself but also doesn’t want to feel taken advantage of. So, how do we find that balance?

Here are a few strategies to consider:

  1. Communicate Clearly: If you have a need, express it. Sometimes people don’t realize what we want or need until we say it. We teach others how we wish to be treated—and sometimes we need to retrain them.
  2. Set Healthy Boundaries: It’s okay to protect your energy. If someone consistently takes but never gives, it might be time to reassess that relationship.
  3. Practice Self-Compassion: It’s okay to feel upset. Acknowledge your feelings and give yourself grace.
  4. Focus on What You Can Control: You can’t change others, but you can change how you respond.

I believe in kindness and generosity, but it’s equally essential to take care of ourselves, especially as caregivers. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that you’re not alone.

To help you navigate these challenges, I’ve created a journal filled with prompts for peace of mind. If you’d like to explore these topics further and find some clarity, visit coach-wendy.com/journal to download your copy!

Thank you for reading! How do you manage your expectations of others? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Take care, and see you in the next post!

3 Strategies for Women in the Sandwich Generation to Thrive

As a woman in the sandwich generation, I know firsthand the challenges of balancing the needs of aging loved ones with my own personal and professional responsibilities. It can feel like a never-ending juggling act, leaving us exhausted and overwhelmed. But what if I told you that with the right mindset and strategies, you can bridge the gap from struggling to thriving?

One of the most common obstacles we face is the belief that “if I bring someone in to help, I have failed my loved one.” This sentiment is rooted in our deep desire to be the sole caregiver, but it can also lead to burnout, physical and emotional exhaustion. I remember feeling this way when my mother was diagnosed with dementia. I was determined to be the one to care for her, even though it was slowly consuming me. It wasn’t until I finally reached out for help that I realized asking for assistance was not a sign of failure, but an act of self-care that benefited both my mother and myself.

The path to a thriving life begins with building a team of support and utilizing available resources. By delegating tasks and responsibilities, we can alleviate the burden and find more time and energy to focus on our own health and personal goals.

Here are three easy tips to help you transition from struggling to thriving:

Prioritize Self-Care

After years of putting my own needs last, I finally made the decision to incorporate holistic practices like mindfulness, and guided meditations into my daily routine. The transformation was remarkable – I found myself feeling calmer, more present, and better able to savor the precious moments with my mother. By making self-care a priority, I was able to approach my caregiving responsibilities with more patience, empathy, and joy.

Develop a Clear Strategy

With the support of a caring coach, I was able to create a detailed plan that balanced my caregiving duties with my personal and professional commitments. This helped me feel more in control and less overwhelmed by the constant demands on my time and energy. By setting clear boundaries and expectations, I was able to be more intentional about how I spent my days, ensuring I had the time and space to recharge and pursue my own interests.

Build a Supportive Network

Surrounding myself with a network of family, friends, and professional resources has been a game-changer. Whether it’s a trusted friend who lends a listening ear or a medical professional who helps with my mother’s care, I’ve learned to lean on this network when I need a helping hand. The emotional, practical, and logistical support I’ve received has been invaluable in helping me maintain a sense of balance and well-being.

By implementing these strategies, I’ve been able to reclaim a sense of control and find the peace of mind I so desperately sought. The journey from challenges to a thriving life is not an easy one, but it is a transformative process that has led me to a more joyful and purposeful existence.

🩷 Self-Care Tips for the Sandwich Generation This Valentine’s Day 🩷

As we approach Valentine’s Day, many of us are focused on showering our loved ones with affection and appreciation. What about showing that same level of care and compassion to yourself?

For women in the sandwich generation, caring for our families, friends, and communities, it can often feel like our own needs come last. We’re constantly juggling a million responsibilities, trying to be patient, caring, and present for everyone who relies on us.

Can you relate?

In the midst of all that giving, it’s so important that we also find ways to care for ourselves. Because when we’re depleted, it becomes exponentially harder to show up as our best selves not only for ourselves but also for the people we love.

This Valentine’s Day, I invite you to give yourself the gift of a pause, time to reflect, and space to replenish your well.  Carving out just a few minutes each day to write, doodle, or simply be present, you’ll start to feel a profound sense of peace and grounding.

No more getting lost in the dark holes of unrealistic expectations or feelings of unworthiness.

What if I told you that there was an easy to use gadget to guide you towards self-compassion, gratitude, and the simple joy of honoring your own needs?  Would you want to know more?

As one of my clients shared, “I did get a chance to let some emotions out. I am grateful.” That’s the power of creating a consistent self-care practice – it gives you the space to process your feelings, instead of constantly pushing them down.

When you invest in yourself, you’re making an investment in your own well being. You’re saying “yes” to finding ways to stay grounded, even in the midst of chaos. And you’re giving yourself the gift of that elusive but oh-so-important feeling: peace of mind.

So this Valentine’s Day, show yourself some extra love and care. Head over to Amazon and grab that easy to use gadget –  your Self-Care Sanctuary Journal today. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.

How to enjoy peace of mind and focus in the new year

Are you looking for an easy way to wrap up this past year?

Recently I did a very powerful and easy exercise looking back at this last year that I really want to share with you.

First, I looked at all of my pictures on my camera roll for the past year. Starting with the first day of 2024 to the end. Looking at the pictures helped to jog my memory about special things that happened and I wrote them out in my journal. Has that ever happened to you? Just by looking at a picture, does it also take you back to that moment and the thoughts and feelings you were experiencing?

Then, in my journal I wrote, ‘What made me successful’ because that is how I felt coming to the end of 2024.

I let it flow and ended up with 7 pages. Which I will be able to look back on whenever I like.

Once I felt complete reflecting on the previous year, I then took a few days to process that. Then I began to look ahead to the new year.

A few days later, I asked myself what I desire in 2025 and I wrote those out in my journal.

What if you tried this exercise for yourself? What do you think it would give to you?

Want a journal to easily guide you to peace of mind and focus? I have just the thing. My Self-Care Sanctuary Journal is now available on Amazon through my Associates Link where I do earn a small commission (thank you for your support).

A Man On The Inside Gets It All Right

#AManOnTheInside

Watching this show through the lens of a daughter whose mother has been in a care setting for 13 plus years, I can see that the writers of A Man On the Inside have done their homework.

✔️ Daughter grappling with her strained relationship with her dad and coping with her mother’s death oh and trying to balance work, a husband and three children.

✔️ The ever evolving dichotomy of the parent/child and child/parent dynamic.

✔️ Children not being there enough because they are busy – however you see yourself in this. I noticed myself a few times here, to be honest.

✔️ Gossip spreads faster in a ‘community’ than anywhere else in the world.

When your parent moves into a ‘community’ it brings up a LOT of emotions – not just for them. It brings up a LOT of emotions for you, too.

✔️ The feeling of needing to care for everyone else before caring for yourself.

✔️ Caring for your parent, for your children, working full time and still having time for your partner.

✔️ Exhaustion and wresting with the whole crazy part of it all.

✔️ Overwhelm and wishing you had peace of mind.

Having peace of mind is something you can have and your next best step to it is by grabbing your FREE Journal WITH 30 days of Journaling Prompts

Find out in 30 days what your life will look like when you are able to release all guilt, let go of worry, find balance and be present.

Did I just see that? Parents aged 65+

As we head into the holiday season, a heads up for you if you have parents aged 65+

You may notice some things with your parents that you may not have noticed before – forgetfulness, not acting like themselves, their stamina just isn’t what it used to be.  It can be upsetting for you and just know that it is equally as upsetting to them, things changing.

You may find yourself wondering ‘what will this mean for me?’  It may also show up as fear of the work it may take, feeling lost at the beginning, feeling the insecurity of how to address things as they arise.

I’d like to invite you to give yourself a break here and for right now, just notice the things that might be different about your parent.

Why is this crucial for you?  Because we can get into our heads and spiral so fast into overwhelm.  It’s stress on your mind, body and emotions.   During the holiday season, it’s amplified even higher.

After the holidays are over, process what you’ve seen.  Give voice to it.

I’m here if you’d like to talk it over.  Just send me an email at coachwsbt@gmail.com and let me know.

7 Reasons to Put Yourself First as a Caregiver

Slow is steady.  Steady is smooth.  Smooth is fast.  Fast is deadly. That hit. I’d heard one of my mentor coaches say this so often – Slow is steady. Steady is smooth. Smooth is fast. But she left out the last sentence. Fast is deadly.

When I googled this phrase that last sentence, Fast is deadly, popped up.

So today, I want to discuss an essential topic that often gets overlooked: the importance of putting yourself first as a caregiver. While caring for others can be a noble and fulfilling role, it is also very demanding. That’s why it’s crucial to remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup and as a result, you may find yourself in fight, flight & freeze.

What is Fight, Flight & Freeze and how it affects you:

Fight, Flight and Freeze are what shows up when your executive function has shut off. As a result of being in the state of fight, flight and freeze you may be experiencing symptoms including frustration, guilt, resentment, excessive fatigue and anxiety. You may be isolating yourself. Your relationships with family and friends may be suffering. You feel like you have no time to invest in anyone but the person who needs care. Your loved ones are saying to you, ‘You look exhausted’ or ‘I’m worried about you.’

The remedy to all of these symptoms of being in fight, flight & freeze is self-care.

Seven compelling reasons why I invite you to consider that self-care should be a priority for you:

Prevent Burnout: Caregiving can be emotionally and physically draining. Prioritizing your well-being helps prevent burnout, so that you can provide the best care possible. For them and for you.

Enhance Your Health: When you take care of yourself, you reduce stress and lower the risk of health issues. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep contribute to your overall health, so that you can work in your executive functioning brain, which makes making decisions and moving forward easier.

Improve Emotional Resilience: By focusing on your mental health, you build emotional resilience. This means you’re better equipped to handle the challenges that come with caregiving, so that you can better preserve your sanity.

Model Healthy Behavior: When you prioritize self-care, you set an example for those you care for. It teaches them the importance of self-love and encourages them to take care of their own needs to whatever degree they are able.

Increase Productivity: Taking breaks and focusing on your own needs can boost your productivity. You’ll find that you can accomplish more when you’re well-rested and mentally refreshed.

Strengthen Relationships: When you care for yourself, you’re in a better emotional state to connect with others. This can strengthen your relationships with both the person you care for as well as your friends, family and spouse or partner.

Rediscover Joy: Engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment can reignite your passion for life. When you’re happy and fulfilled, you can share that positivity with others. What you focus on grows. Focusing on gratitude brings with it more to be joyful for.

Putting yourself first isn’t selfish; it’s a necessary step to ensure you can provide the best care possible – for them and for you. Remember, you are just as important as those you care for.
